Alert was founded in the late 1960's by Robert Smith.
In 1971 Smith sold the company to Glen and Diane Grinstead. The Grinstead's later brought in employees Sandy Comfort, Tanky Lowry, and Alan Walker as partners.
In 1988 when Allyn Middelkamp sold his company (Middelkamp Ambulance) to St Mary Corwin's Hospital; Glen Grinstead considered Alert Ambulance to a competing hospital (Parkview) but decided against selling at that time.
A reference in the March 20, 1993 Pueblo Chieftain indicates that CareLine signed a letter of intent to acquire Alert in 1993. The paper also indicates that CareLine was also negotiating to buy Arkansas Valley Ambulance in Canon City and Haley Ambulance in Denver.
