Professional Ambulance Service
1966 - 1994
Los Angeles County CA
Founder: Arlington Rand Brooks Jr.

Acquired by MedTrans February 8, 1994

If you are a movie buff, this story will be right down your alley! Who can name the actor that played Scarlett O'Hara's first husband (Charles Hamilton) in the movie "Gone with the Wind". Or perhaps you know the lucky actor who gave Marilyn Monroe her first on screen kiss in 1948. He was known as 'Lucky Jenkins' in the Hopalong Cassidy Movies, and 'Cpl Randy Boon' in Rin Tin Tin. Give up?

Arlington Rand Brooks Jr. was his name, and he was born to a wealthy family in St Louis on September 21, 1918. His father was a wholesale jeweler. When he was only four, his family was forced to move to LA after losing their money during the Great Depression. Rand graduated from Beverly Hills High School and was working at a local brokerage house when an agent discovered him.

MGM signed him and his first movie was a part he landed in Mickey Rooney's Film, "Love Finds Andy Hardy." It was an un-credited part, but started his Hollywood career.

In 1955 Rand Brooks and Lois Laurel (Daughter of comedian Stan Laurel - of Laurel and Hardy) were married.

In 1964 Brooks invested all his money and directed, "Legend of the Northwest". The movie was tied up in a legal dispute when the business manager was charged with forgery. It was never released, ruining Brooks financially. This is said to have finalized his breach with Hollywood, and caused the end of his marriage to Lois Laurel that same year. All in all, Rand Brooks appeared in over 100 films.

In 1966, Brooks founded Professional Ambulance service. He opened the company with 2 used ambulances and a credit card on Feb 10, 1966 in Glendale CA.

Despite his breach with Hollywood, Brooks was able to capitalize on his previous TV credits. It is in that venue that he acted in the 1972 World Premier movie "Emergency" that kicked off the TV series, he ironically played a Police Officer instead of a Paramedic. He appeared in a scene of "Rescue 8" where he played a Firefighter. He also appeared in episodes of Adam 12, Perry Mason, Bonanza and Gunsmoke.

In 1975, Professional Ambulance Service was awarded the city of Glendale's Ambulance Provider's contract, a service that the city had provided since 1937. Professional Held this contract until 1999.

In 1978 Brooks married Hermine Ann Dale, a former executive at Professional Ambulance. By this time, the company had become the largest private 911 provider in the LA County area. Professional Ambulance had also become a nationally known company which was highly regarded as one of the best in the nation, having won several awards and commendations.

In 1982, Brooks retired from the day to day operations when he hired the former Glendale Fire Chief Allan R. Stone. As Fire Chief in 1975, Stone had opposed the transfer of the Cities Ambulance contract to Rand, but in 1985, as President of Professional Ambulance, he was instrumental in winning a five year extension of Professional's contract. During Professional's tenure as the 911 Paramedic provider, they initiated a Bike-Medic Program; 12 Lead EKG's; and a SWAT-Medic Team.

When Brooks sold the company to MedTrans in 1994, there were about 185 employees, staffing over 40 ambulances from 12 stations in Northern LA County. He was retained as a consultant for a few years, but finally retired to his ranch (Aberdeen Farms) in Santa Ynez where he raised Champion Andalusian Horses with his wive. Rand Brooks died on Sept 1, 2003.
